ARGYLL or ARGYLE

Argyle street(Glasgow) was originally a rather
unpleasant street,known as Westergait.It was
drained ,sanitised and renamed Anderson
walk,but in 1751 it's name changed again ,
to Argyll street in honour of John Campbell
,the 2nd DUKE OF ARGYLL(1678-1743),
THE most ardent champion of the act of union
(1707)and commander of the Hanoverian troops
who defeated the Jacobites in the rebellion of
1715.The spelling ''ARGYLE'' was adopted
by 1826,although the form''ARGYLL'' was
reverted to for a brief period in 1880s.
